The friendship paradox in scale-free networks

چکیده
Our friends have more friends than we do. That is the basis of the friendship paradox. In mathematical terms, the mean number of friends of friends is higher than the mean number of friends. In the present study, we analyzed the relationship between the mean degree of vertices (individuals), 〈k〉, and the mean number of friends of friends, 〈kFF 〉, in scale-free networks with degrees ranging from a minimum degree (kmin) to a maximum degree (kmax). We deduced an expression for 〈kFF 〉−〈k〉 for scale-free networks following a power-law distribution with a given scaling parameter (α). Based on this expression, we can quantify how the degree distribution of a scale-free network affects the mean number of friends of friends.

Generalized friendship paradox in complex networks: The case of scientific collaboration
The friendship paradox states that your friends have on average more friends than you have. Does the paradox "hold" for other individual characteristics like income or happiness? To address this question, we generalize the friendship paradox for arbitrary node characteristics in complex networks. By analyzing two coauthorship networks of Physical Review journals and Google Scholar profiles, we ...
متن کاملQualities and Inequalities in Online Social Networks through the Lens of the Generalized Friendship Paradox
The friendship paradox is the phenomenon that in social networks, people on average have fewer friends than their friends do. The generalized friendship paradox is an extension to attributes other than the number of friends. The friendship paradox and its generalized version have gathered recent attention due to the information they provide about network structure and local inequalities. In thi...
متن کاملGeneralized friendship paradox in networks with tunable degree-attribute correlation
One of the interesting phenomena due to topological heterogeneities in complex networks is the friendship paradox: Your friends have on average more friends than you do. Recently, this paradox has been generalized for arbitrary node attributes, called the generalized friendship paradox (GFP). The origin of GFP at the network level has been shown to be rooted in positive correlations between deg...
متن کاملTail-scope: Using friends to estimate heavy tails of degree distributions in large-scale complex networks
Many complex networks in natural and social phenomena have often been characterized by heavy-tailed degree distributions. However, due to rapidly growing size of network data and concerns on privacy issues about using these data, it becomes more difficult to analyze complete data sets. Thus, it is crucial to devise effective and efficient estimation methods for heavy tails of degree distributio...
متن کاملMeasuring the Generalized Friendship Paradox in Networks with Quality-Dependent Connectivity
The friendship paradox is a sociological phenomenon stating that most people have fewer friends than their friends do. The generalized friendship paradox refers to the same observation for attributes other than degree, and it has been observed in Twitter and scientific collaboration networks. This paper takes an analytical approach to model this phenomenon. We consider a preferential attachment...
